"I never thought I'd be in a strip center," Toast City Diner founder Amy Russo said when she opened her fifth New Jersey location on Route 9 South. She'd built her earlier restaurants in walkable downtowns like Asbury Park and Red Bank, so she redid the interior with plush booths and cafe curtains "to make it feel like you're not in a strip center."
That quote says more about eating out in Manalapan than any restaurant review could. This township doesn't have a Main Street to anchor its food scene. It has Route 9, and along that stretch of highway, two shopping plazas have quietly become the place where nearly every notable new restaurant lands. When the township's own "A Taste of Manalapan" Restaurant Week runs September 27 through October 4, most of what you'll be sampling sits inside those same two parking lots.
Two Plazas, Not One Main Street
Towne Pointe Center, at 357 Route 9 South, is where Toast opened in November 2024. It joined a lineup already there: Estrella Azul, Mezza Luna Italian Restaurant, Piramida Restaurant, and Rook. That's five sit-down restaurants sharing one parking lot with a Paris Baguette, a Chase branch, and a Pure Barre studio.
A few minutes south, the Galleria at 100 US Highway 9 tells a similar story. Coal Fired Pizza has run its 800-degree coal-burning hearth there since 2010. Tribos Peri Peri, a Portuguese fast-casual concept with other New Jersey locations in Jersey City, Saddle Brook, and Metuchen, built out a kitchen in the same center. A Thai kitchen and a Japanese bistro round out the food options, tucked between a Batteries Plus and a bathroom remodeling showroom.

Neither plaza was built as a food destination. Towne Pointe Center's other tenants include Lightbridge Academy, Edible Arrangements, Goldfish Swim School, and Flemington Furs. The Galleria's anchor is a battery and light bulb store. Restaurants filled in around retail that had nothing to do with dining, which is exactly why Russo felt the need to design her way out of the strip-mall feeling rather than lean into it.
What Restaurant Week Actually Means This Year
The township's Restaurant Week runs under the banner "A Taste of Manalapan," and this year's dates put it squarely in early fall, September 27 through October 4. The concept works the way restaurant weeks usually do: participating spots offer a special menu or pricing for the week to get residents through the door.
What's different in Manalapan is the geography. In a town with a traditional downtown, a restaurant week means a walk down one street. Here, because so much of the recent growth sits inside Towne Pointe Center and the Galleria, a single evening of driving can realistically cover both plazas without much of a detour. You could start with small plates at Estrella Azul, walk two doors down for a slice at Coal Fired Pizza's neighbor, and still be home by nine. The event's structure mirrors the town's actual restaurant map more than it mirrors the classic Main Street restaurant week that towns like Red Bank or Marlboro run.
The New Name Everyone's Watching For
The most-talked-about addition hasn't opened its doors yet. On A Roll, a Staten Island burger and roast beef concept known for its Bruzzer Sandwich, a third-pound Pat LaFrieda burger, announced in early August that it would open its first New Jersey location on Route 9 South in Manalapan. As of that announcement, no opening date had been set, and the company's own social post called it "a huge milestone" without giving residents a firm timeline.
That kind of gap between announcement and opening is normal for restaurant buildouts, but it means anyone circling Restaurant Week dates on a calendar shouldn't expect On A Roll to be part of the lineup just yet. It's worth keeping an eye on Route 9 South over the coming weeks. Given how quickly Toast, Coal Fired Pizza, and Tribos Peri Peri all found their way into the same two-plaza cluster, there's a real chance On A Roll ends up as a sixth or seventh name in that same stretch of highway rather than someplace new.
The Mainstays Restaurant Week Doesn't Touch
Not every good meal in Manalapan lives inside a shopping center. Sal's Gourmet Pizza has built a following on vegan pizza under fifteen dollars, served under a mural of the Italian countryside. Manalapan Diner, a Greek-American spot on Route 9, has stayed open early and late for years with a full menu that doesn't change much and doesn't need to. King Wok draws a weekend dinner crowd for fourteen-dollar General Tso's chicken in portions built for sharing. Konbu Japanese Restaurant has run its sushi bar for fifteen years and recently redid its interior without losing the regulars who show up for the sashimi lunch.
These places sit outside the plaza system that's absorbed almost every new opening in the last two years. They're proof that a town without a downtown still has restaurants that function like downtown fixtures, the kind of place where the owner knows your order. Restaurant Week specials tend to favor newer, higher-margin concepts looking to build a following, so don't be surprised if some of these longtime spots sit the week out. That's not a knock on them. It's just a different business model than a promotional discount is built for.
How To Actually Use The Week
If you're planning around the September 27 to October 4 window, a few things are worth knowing before you go:
- Check each restaurant's own page or social account for the specific Restaurant Week menu and pricing, since the township event page doesn't list per-restaurant offers.
- Reservations at the sit-down spots inside Towne Pointe Center, particularly Piramida and Mezza Luna, tend to fill up faster during promotional weeks. Call ahead rather than walking in on a Friday or Saturday night.
- If you want to sample both plazas in one outing, Towne Pointe Center and the Galleria are close enough on Route 9 that splitting an evening between them is realistic without losing your parking spot twice.
- Watch for On A Roll's opening announcement separately. It's unlikely to be ready in time for this year's Restaurant Week, but it's the next name to watch on this stretch of highway.
Manalapan's food scene isn't organized the way a lot of Monmouth County towns are. There's no strip of storefronts you can stroll past to see what's new. Instead, the town's growth has funneled into two ordinary shopping centers that happen to have absorbed nearly every recent opening, from an established diner chain to a Portuguese fast-casual concept to whatever On A Roll turns out to be. Restaurant Week just makes that pattern easier to see, one parking lot at a time.
